Questions About Her Work

Why focus specifically on older adults and outdoor activities?

I've spent enough time in nature to know it's genuinely transformative. But most guides out there assume you're young, fit, and ready for a challenging hike. That's just not realistic for the majority of people over 60. I started this work because I noticed my own family members were staying indoors during retirement when they'd actually love to be outside — they just didn't know where to start. There's real evidence showing that regular outdoor time improves physical health, mental wellbeing, and social connection. Nature shouldn't be exclusive.

What makes Connemara different as a place for outdoor leisure?

It's the combination of accessibility and genuine wilderness. You've got these stunning boglands that feel remote and authentic, but they're not as technically demanding as mountain terrain. The lakes are scattered throughout — perfect for breaking up a walk with a rest and a view. Plus, the weather's more predictable than higher elevations. I've spent 12 years mapping out which routes work best in different seasons, where the ground's firmest, which paths have the gentlest gradients. You don't need to be an experienced hiker to experience something truly special here.

What's the most important thing people get wrong about outdoor activities for older adults?

They assume it's all about distance or difficulty. Actually, it's about frequency, consistency, and enjoyment. Someone doing a 2-mile walk twice a week is getting far more benefit than someone pushing themselves on a grueling 8-mile trek once a year. I've seen people become genuinely more confident just from regular, manageable outdoor time. That confidence then carries into other parts of their lives. The goal isn't to prove anything — it's to create a routine that you'll actually stick with because it's pleasant.

How has your research changed the way you approach outdoor activity recommendations?

I've learned to listen to what people actually tell me rather than what I think should work. I've talked to hundreds of locals who use these spaces regularly — they know where the boggy bits are, where the wind funnels through, which paths flood in winter. That ground-level knowledge combined with environmental science creates better guidance. I also pay attention to the psychological aspects. A route that's technically easy but feels remote and special is more valuable than a route that's easy but feels monotonous. That's why I document not just difficulty but atmosphere and what you'll see along the way.

What Drives Her Work

Growing up in Galway, I spent my childhood in the boglands and around the lakes. It wasn't exotic or special to me then — it was just home. But I've realized over the years that the people who grew up here sometimes stop seeing it once they get older. They think they can't access it anymore because they're not as mobile. That's heartbreaking to me.

My work isn't about conquering nature or proving fitness. It's about genuine connection. It's about being outside on a quiet morning, hearing the birds, feeling the air change. It's about sitting by a lake with a friend and having time to actually talk. That's accessible to almost everyone — we just need to know where those places are and what to expect when we get there.

I combine rigorous observation — years of walking these routes in different seasons, noting ground conditions, safety hazards, rest points — with conversations. Real conversations with hundreds of people about what works for them, what scares them, what they'd love to do but don't think they can. That's where the best insights come from.

Nature shouldn't require permission or extreme fitness. It's there for everyone. My job is to help people access it safely and enjoyably, exactly as they are.
